Heritage of Alentejo
You will be based in the beautiful town of Evora for the first couple of nights. You will find an abundance of historic building, churches and national monuments here and a guided cycling tour will take you to visit the main attractions, including the quirky bone chapel decorated with thousands of bones taken from the local cemetry.
You will find many ancient towns and relicts in the surrounding Alentejo area wating to be explored, including the medieval hilltop villages of Monsaraz and Marvao or the Roman city of Elvas with its impressive aquaduct and the historic forts.
Not only is Alentejo one of the largest and best wine regions in Portugal, but the region also has a proud culinary tradition, waited to be explored and tasted in the many restaurants specializing in local and traditional cooking.
Traditions and heritage have a special significance in Alentejo and you will encounter local arts, crafts and customs in many parts throughout the area.
The Alqueva Dam
The Alqueva dam is the largest water body in Alentejo and Eastern Portugal. From the medieval hilltop village of Monsaraz, you can enjoy the fanstactic views over the Alentejo countryside and Alqueva lakes. The Alqueva area is one of the few dark skies areas in Portugal, that allows you to admire the night sky with as little light pollution as possible. A night-time canoeing tour will show you the wonders of the star-filled night sky over the dam.
