1. Epic Hiking Trails

Madeira’s rugged terrain is crisscrossed with an extensive network of hiking trails, from challenging mountain paths to scenic coastal walks. The island’s famous "levadas"— historic irrigation channels — provide unique routes through lush forests, steep valleys, and along dramatic cliffs. The Vereda do Areeiro trail, which connects the island’s two highest peaks, Pico do Arieiro and Pico Ruivo, offers breathtaking views and an exhilarating challenge for seasoned hikers. But also for less experienced trekkers and families, Madeira has leisurely “levada hikes”. Our favourite? The Levada das 25 Fontes. It leads through the enchanting Laurissilva forests along many waterfalls with plenty of shady spots to relax or have a picnic. Another recommendation is Verada da Ponta de Sao Louranço. This trail winds along the rugged coastline with panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean.

2. World-Class Canyoning

For those seeking a more adrenaline-fueled adventure in the great outdoors, Madeira is one of Europe’s top destinations for canyoning. The island’s steep gorges, cascading waterfalls, and crystal-clear streams create the perfect adventure playground for this sport. Canyoning in Madeira involves rappelling down waterfalls, sliding through natural water slides, and jumping into pristine pools—immersing you in the island’s wild and unspoiled nature. Ribeira das Cales and Ribeiro Frio (on the northern side of Madeira Island) are popular spots that offer a mix of challenges and unforgettable experiences.

Canyoning with the family? Yes, you can! There is no need for previous experience, and kids as young as 8 years old will enjoy this excursion.

3. Mountain Biking and Off-Road Adventures

Madeira’s challenging terrain and varied landscapes also make it a top destination for mountain biking and off-road adventures. The island offers a range of trails, from technical single tracks through dense forests to rugged mountain routes with sweeping ocean views. For those who prefer four wheels to two, off-road jeep tours are a fantastic way to explore Madeira’s remote areas. With experienced guides behind the wheel, these rugged 4x4 vehicles transport you through a variety of areas. Along the way, there is so much to see and do that young and old will love this day out; visit charming villages, hidden waterfalls, natural pools for a refreshing swim, or viewpoints that offer stunning vistas of the island's coast.

4. Thrilling Water Sports

Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, Madeira is a paradise for water sports enthusiasts. From surfing the waves to exploring the underwater world through diving or snorkeling, there’s no shortage of aquatic adventures. The southwest of the island has the best surf spots. Known for its consistent swells and breathtaking scenery, the charming village Jardim do Mar has earned a reputation as one of Europe's top surfing destinations. The island’s unique underwater volcanic landscape, teeming with marine life, makes it also a popular spot for diving and snorkeling. You can spot moray eels, starfish, and barracudas while snorkeling on Madeira. And with water temperatures between 19 and 25 degrees, it is never really cold. A perfect snorkeling spot for families is Garajau Beach, east of Funchal. The beach is at the foot of a cliff, but you don't have to climb down yourself... there is a cable car that takes you down to the beach, after which the calm and crystal-clear waters await. A day of snorkeling here is full of small adventures!

5. Catamaran Tours and Marine Wildlife Encounters

Madeira's crystal-clear waters are not just for surfing or diving—they're also perfect for a leisurely adventure on a catamaran. Sail along the island’s stunning coastline, with opportunities to spot marine wildlife such as dolphins and whales. Children will love to look out for these wonderful creatures! While sailing you will learn all about these marine animals and make a stop to go swimming or snorkeling in secluded bays. Real adventurists can even choose to swim with dolphins in their natural habitat. Tours start from Calheta - one of the warmest places in Madeira - or from Marina de Funchal. Leaving Funchal, you have the chance to observe the coastline of Madeira and enjoy the views over the mountains.
